Recognizing that the plateau on the west bank of the Hudson River was, at the time, the most strategic position in America, George Washington selected the spot to build a fort at West Point in 1778.

In 1802, President Thomas Jefferson signed legislation establishing the United States Military Academy at West Point, where Washington's fort had been built. For more than 200 years West Point has trained and taught America's finest young men and women for military service and to provide leadership for our country. West Point graduates have served honorably in every military conflict America has fought since the institution was founded.

Today, West Point is home to 4,400 Cadets living on a 16,000-acre reserve just 50 miles north of New York City. In recent decades, the curriculum has been expanded to include more than a dozen fields of study, including a wide range of subjects in the humanities and sciences.

Because of the excellent education and leadership experience they received at West Point, graduates have historically gone on to high-level military and civilian leadership positions. Graduates include Presidents Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower, Generals Douglas MacArthur and George S. Patton Jr., Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin and industrialist Henry A. du Pont.
